Lilly Strachan is one of Skateboard GB’s most exciting young talents. Ranked 3rd in the United Kingdom and 29th in the world for park skating, at just fifteen, she is already making a name for herself. Ahead of the World Skate Park event in Rome, which gets underway on 1st October, we caught up with Lilly herself to discuss tricks, goals and why more girls should get into skateboarding!
WHAT IS YOUR EARLIEST MEMORY ON A SKATEBOARD?
LILLY:
“My earliest memory is when my first board arrived and as soon as it was out of the packaging, I spent hours (in the rain!) trying to ride up and down the patio in my garden. I fell over so much, but I couldn’t get off it.”
WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE TO OTHER GIRLS WANTING TO GET INTO SKATEBAORDING?
“Be confident and believe in yourself. Know that falling is part of skateboarding and it shouldn’t hold you back. Some tricks seem absolutely impossible at first, but perseverance and composure will help you land them in no time.”
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO SKATE?
“My favourite places to skate are BAYSIXTY6 skatepark in London. And Spit and Sawdust skatepark in Cardiff.”
FAVOURITE PLACE YOU HAVE TRAVELLED FOR A COMPETITION?
“Some of my favourite places I have travelled for a competition are Prague, Argentina and Finland. They were all so much fun and it’s so cool to see what skateboarding culture is like in different parts of the world.”
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE UPCOMING QUALIFIERS?
“My goals for the upcoming qualifiers are to gain more points, get through the qualifiers and to have as much fun as possible!”
WHO ARE YOUR MAIN SKATING INSPIRATIONS MALE & FEMALE?
“Some of my inspirations for skateboarding are Oskar Rozenburg for his style and trick choice, and Nicole Hause for her fearlessness.”
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE?
“My goals for the future are to keep pushing myself with skateboarding and learn tricks that I wouldn’t even think about doing now. Hopefully I can qualify for the Olympics and skate in places I’ve dreamed of travelling to.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TRICK?
“My favourite tricks are crailslides, backside tails and inverts.”
HOW DO YOU RELAX AFTER A BIG COMPETITION?
“After a big competition, I relax by spending time with my friends and family, and reading or watching movies.”
