podium contenders for 2018 fia world rallycross championship
Taking 27 points at the inaugural Circuit of the Americas, PSRX Volkswagen driver Johan Kristoffersson cruised to his second consecutive world title in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.
But who will be joining him on the podium? With 2 races to go, 2 podium places up for grabs, and 9 points separating 4 drivers, it’s going to be a really tight battle!
Here we take a look at the main contenders…
Mattias Ekström (EKS Audi Sport)
Overall position: 2nd
Championship points: 204
One of the most versatile drivers in the world, a consistent Mattias Ekström is currently leading contender to take 2nd spot. In second position overall, the Swede is a previous World RX Champion, came 2nd in last year’s Championship, and has the racing pedigree to achieve this.
Petter Solberg (PSRX Volkswagen SwedeN)
Overall position: 3rd
Championship points: 202
Petter Solberg has jumped to 3rd place after taking 27 points in America. Having almost been forced out of this year’s Championship because of illness, it would be a wonderful story if the Swedish two-time World RX Champion made it on to the podium.
Andreas Bakkerud (EKS Audi Sport)
Overall position: 4th
Championship points: 200
One of the most popular Rallycross drivers, Norwegian Andreas Bakkerud is just 2 points off 3rd place and 4 points behind teammate Mattias Ekström. Could he achieve his best ever RX season result this year by snatching 2nd place?
Sébastien Loeb (Team Peugeot Total)
Overall position: 5th
Championship points: 195
The most successful driver in World Rally Championship history, Frenchman Sébastien Loeb is only 7 points off 3rd place in the RX battle. Although inconsistent in form this season, Team Peugeot Total is hoping their driver’s racing pedigree will earn him a podium place.
